Volunteering to be Assistant Wardens
It might seem like a crazy idea but when we were offered there "opportunity" to help to look after a site as assistant wardens in Slinfold, we thought it'd be a great way to meet lots of people AND to have a two week stint without having to pay for any site fees.
Our Experience of Assisting
Having volunteered at the National Rally which was held on the Spring Bank holiday weekend (27th to 30th may 2016) we were thrust straight into a bit of safety training at Slinfold. Back in 2016, the club representatives made a HUGE assumption that Wendy would do the "meet n Greet" and Admin work at the site and that Steve would do the outdoor work like gardening and emptying the bins. This seems very unfair to Wendy, as she wanted to do the gardening work, Steve's not good at that, and Steve is more "in tune with the Admin and the Meet n Greet" bit.
Starting a YouTube Channel
Neither of us can remember why we started "The Happy Travellers" YouTube Channel apart from the thought that we might like to share our new chapter with others AND create a good aide memoir of our travels for the future. Anyway, we produced and published our very first vlog post on 1st June 2016.
Final Verdict
This was an excellent two weeks of volunteering (free camping) and we both enjoyed it a great deal. Ten years on and we would probably not volunteer for a large club again, knowing what we know now!
